Set your DVR’s: an Incredible Ken Burns Cancer Film

A DVR reminder of a film I have mentioned before: The incredible new Ken Burns “Cancer – the Emperor of All Maladies” PBS mini-series will air next week on Mon-Wed (4/30-5/1), I highly recommend to set your DVR’s and tell Family & friends, especially those impacted by cancer!

I had the privilege of attending an advance screening a few weeks ago.  They only showed a 45 minute excerpt of the 3 episode mini-series but based upon those 45 minutes (and the wonderful Pulitizer Prize winning book which is the basis for the film), the excerpt I saw was a beautifully done film – brutally honest but also (especially in the 3rd episode) so much filled with HOPE with all the incredible therapy advances currently being made. I was moved to tears by it – tears at the sad parts and tears of hope in those parts… A stunning film and a great information resource on all the many aspects of cancer.

The 3rd episode (Wed) is especially meaningful for patients and family/friends to see.  It focuses on the real-world incredible advances in cancer therapy that have been made in recent years. For example, Wed’s episode includes day-by-day footage of the first child to receive the amazing CAR-T immunotherapy which had me literally holding my breath.  Spoiler alert: that little 6-year-old girl was literally a few weeks away from death when she became the first child to be given the experimental immunotherapy in a clinical trial.  2 years later, she is a very happy, and as far as they can tell cancer-free,8 year old!

Here is the commercial for the film (I swear I didn’t photoshop the Youtube file picture!!):

  1. Very unfortunate I can’t watch PBS in Jeddah. Even commercial it said that “The uploader has not made this video available in your country”. Tom, is there a way to watch the miniseries online?

    • Hi Moustafa, I haven’t seen an online option yet but after it airs on the TV network early next week, I think there is a good chance that replays will be available in other formats. I’ll let you know in a few days!
